GAZUA
‘가즈아’ is a word now frequently encountered in online posts relating to cryptocurrency. It’s been transliterated into English as “GAZUA.”
What does it mean? It’s a stylized version of “Gaja” which means “Let’s go.” It is likely short for the crypto battlecry “Let’s go to the moon.” English speakers frequently shorten it as “To the moon!!”
Of course, with the recent crash of cryptocurrency prices, many are interpreting ‘가즈아’ as “Let’s go (to the bottom of Han River)” — a reference to retail investors who have lost their life savings to the crypto jumping off the bridge over the River Han.
Although jumping off the Han River is one of the most prominent methods for desperate Seoul residents to kill themselves, news reports in recent weeks have shown the preference of failed investors for committing suicide at home. This may be attributable to the fact that winter temperatures on the Korean peninsula have reached record subzero lows.
