Wilshire/Western/Alfred Hoyun Song Station
The Metro Purple Line Wilshire/Western Station will now be known as the “Wilshire/Western/Alfred Hoyun Song Station” (윌셔·웨스턴/알프레드 호윤 송 스테이션) in honor of Alfred Hoyun Song.
Born in Hawaii in 1919 on a sugar-cane plantation, Song was the son of plantation workers who had emigrated from Korea. In 1940 he moved to Los Angeles and finished his bachelor’s degree at the University of Southern California. He was the first Asian American legislator elected to the California State Assembly in 1962. He was also the first Korean American to be elected to the California State Senate, where he acted as chairman of the Judiciary Committee.
The motion to rename the station, located in the heart of Koreatown, was sponsored by Metro Board Director and Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chairman Mark Ridley-Thomas.
Metro’s Board of Directors approved the name change of one of Koreatown’s Metro Rail subway stations during its January 24 (Thursday) Board Meeting. Leslie Song Winner, Alfred Song’s daughter, along with her two sisters and one brother, witnessed the vote.
